To Our Supervisors

You, too, can be included in our Union.  None of us have been in your meetings, but we do know just how much they lie.  They probably lie to you and tell you that you cannot be involved with a Union because of your supervisory status with the company.  What Harrah's does not want for you to know is that precedent has been set in Indiana that paves the way for you to have representation with us.  The NLRA does exclude Supervisors from Unions, but there is language that describes what it is meant to be a "supervisor" according to the NLRA.  Although casinos call you supervisors, the interpretation of the law in this case does not include Dual Rates and some Full-Time Floor Supervisors as "supervisors."

The case involves Casino Aztar in Indiana, a Columbia Sussex casino.  It is the same company who operates Horizon and Montbleu.  Despite the fact that their employer calls them "supervisors," interpretation of Federal Law saw it otherwise.  Basically, many of the tasks performed by our Supervisors have strict guidelines, and for the most part, Casino Supervisors are excluded from the decision-making process.  Therefore, Supervisors were allowed to submit their Authorization Cards, were included in the vote for Casino Aztar, and are now a part of their Union.

You may read details of the NLRB's decision here.

The Original Text

Some of you were dealers when Bill Harrah and Harvey Gross were still around, others have quickly worked your way into a suit, and the rest of you are somewhere in between.  When we refer to "Management" or "Executives" elsewhere on this site, we are referring to both out-of-towners like Gary Loveman, and those who were brought in and given the positions within Harrah's for which you were ignored; they are the policy makers, not you who are the executors of their policy, whether you're salaried or have a change of clothes in your locker.

We remember exactly what happened during the last buyout.  Salaried Supervisors were the first ones behind the 8-ball.  Some of you returned, and others unceremoniously left the area.  We still remember, though, and we have seen just how much the fire/rehire can sting.  Everybody is looking over their shoulders in this whole matter, and we still remember the handiwork of "the assassin."

We understand the first drawback of working as a Salaried Supervisor: you work overtime hours for free - not time-and-a-half, not regular hourly wage, but free.  Work your forty hours, and they'll reward you for any of your extra time with zero dollars.

Dual Rates, you are stuck in the middle.  We understand.  Some want to work your way up, and others need security and consistency that you could not find as part-time dealers.  Still others were given the option of the closest job that you could find or no job at all.

On top of all of that, Harrah's is looking at you to be their backbone in their Union-busting efforts.  These Union busters happen to make a bit more than any of us and live quite well.  They tell you that you are responsible for our motives.  Look at all of our issues.  You have some of the same issues!  You did not do one single thing or make one single decision that led to any of our concerns for the direction in which our occupation is heading.  You know us better than that.  You also now know that you can be a part of the Union if enough of you step forward.

You may educate yourself about Union busters by clicking on this button copied from our "Link of the Week."  Episode 3 - Union Busters; The Role of Supervisors, obviously, pertains to Supervisors.  It is Harrah's that will use you to try to keep us divided.

Union Busting

We just need better security.
We are only doing the best that we can to protect ourselves.
