Link of the Week Here are some interesting website links. Yes, the term "week" is arbitrary. |
|
Week #13 TPG/Apollo had no casino experience before they bought our company. They have provided no guarantees that our tokes will be safe if the Nevada Supreme Court rules that they can redistribute our tips to other employees. TWU, on the other hand, knows that TIPS are our primary source of income and can protect them from confiscation.
Week #12 The name says it all. It is where you can meet Larry The Loophole! Week #11 If you would like to post your questions and comments for Dealers everywhere to see, click on the button. If you would like to "network" with Dealers from here and elsewhere, there is a new place to do it. If you have grown tired of the responses provided here (and who can blame you!), you can now have a much greater variety of responses from Dealers everywhere. It is just getting started. You will notice that there are not very many comments posted yet. Register, "Favorite"/Bookmark it, post your comments and check back... Contrary to what Harrah's may want you to believe, registering WILL NOT result in anybody from TWU knocking on your door! Week #10 "The Paris" is another Harrah's property. Like us, they are organizing with TWU. Our Union will be stronger with them, and theirs will be stronger with us, only we cannot "wait and see" if we want to make the most of our opportunity. Week #9 Click on the link to read the article. Here is a quote. "The fact it was a unanimous verdict speaks to the severity of this case," said Kevin Baldwin, one of the attorneys... Week #8 A website for and about Nevada's workers. Some would consider it "information overkill." Week #7 WARNING: VULGAR LANGUAGE! GET THE KIDS OUT OF THE ROOM! THIS MATERIAL IS DEFINITELY OFFENSIVE TO SOME VIEWERS! Sometimes comedians are not so funny. This monologue illustrates the difference between the executives' world and our reality. It may be done in a crass manner, and Mr. Carlin may go overboard at times. Be that as it may, you will get the point about why executives count on us to be uninformed, and why they want us to believe whatever say. Our Union is the only way that we can end their absolute control over our jobs! Week #6 Harrah's policy frequently involves one thing: cutting costs even if it means cutting corners in the process. To quote the article: "The two [Harrah's] hotels in the past several years underwent remodeling projects that either took place without permits or inspections, or resulted in some substandard work."
Week #5 This story is too sad for further commentary. Week #4 Gary Loveman was expected to speak in the week leading up to the Caesars Palace Dealers' election. He instead chose to not speak to Dealers at Harrah's flagship property about the most important decision of their dealing career. This week's link concerns the last time a Nevada Casino CEO tried to convince his workers that TWU could not help them as much as he could. Dealers did not buy it. Steve Wynn held this last-minute meeting with Wynn Dealers to try to convince them to vote against their best interest. He failed. Although the audio quality is not exactly fit for movie theaters, it is the content that is important. You will be subjected to more Union-busting meetings as our efforts progress. Near the end of the recording, he talks about being the dealers' representative! Does that sound familiar? Listed below are excerpts from his anti-Union speech. Look through the rest of the page linked to find out more about the Union busting business. We are being subjected to the exact same tactics that have been used in thousands of anti-Union campaigns since the NLRA became Federal Law. Click here to view the full transcript, plus this contains another link where you may find the audio. Again, you will find a few excerpts below. Wynn Dealers prevailed, 444-149. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ...My job today is to re-instill trust in me from you by admitting that I made a mistake. I am not permitted by law to make promises and that’s as it should be. But I am entitled to say that I’ve got a 40 year history of taking care of people that I work with. Not because I’m a particularly good guy, but because I know how important it is to do that when I see things clearly. I get the picture here. I understand the situation. And I need to restore the feeling here. And in order to do that, I need to stay as your representative here. I need to still be your guy. The union has no experience in our business. They are no special solution to any of our problems. My sensitivity is – whether it comes to me early or late – the ability of us to have a better life is dependant upon us acting like a family and trusting one another. Even if we make mistakes or we’re not perfect... So understand that I’m not angry at anybody and the most rabid anti-Steve guy in the room or gal has nothing to fear from me. You’re not going to get fired – no matter what. Let’s get that straight. I’m standing here on the record saying, I’m not in the back hallways. I’m not being frantic or hysterical. All I’m doing here is standing here, apologizing for the mistake. I’m saying that the thing I wanna do is keep my job as your representative. I don’t want to get fired and have someone between us. It is a vastly more complicated thing to do. If the union gets a ‘yes’ vote from you, I’m required by law to sit down and bargain and a whole new set of things start in. This is a public company and I have to represent the long term interests of the company. These things are usually negotiated – they attempt to negotiate for a period of time. You lose all your flexibility and you have to think very differently for each and every thing. We have to revisit everything about our relationship... I like the relationship that we have now, even though some of you are not satisfied with it. And I want the chance, I want the chance, to do what I can – based upon the understandings that we have – to put the smile back on your face. If I can’t do that, you’ve always got the other option to fire me. But I need for us to be together to take us where we want to go in this building. I’m your guy. I gotta be your guy in order for us to really get great. And I wanna stay that way. Week #3 This video is a production of UAW, who is organizing the casinos of Atlantic City, Foxwoods, and Detroit. We are organizing under Transport Workers Union, an AFL-CIO member. Even though the representatives are of different Unions, you will see that we all have many of the same issues, and the process works the same, in that it is us, members of our own Union, who determine the direction that we need to go. Week #2 Martin (Marty) Levitt , the person in these
videos, is a former union buster. He was also an alcoholic. As part of
his 12-step program, one of his ways to make amends was to write a book
chronicling his time as a union buster and the tricks that he used to
coerce workers into voting against their best interest. It is a very
interesting read, especially for those involved in a Union-organizing
campaign, but perhaps too much of a burden on the time of those of us
who have little. Time spent listening to him speak in these clips is
time well spent. If you are interested in purchasing his book, you may
find it
here and
here. Click on some of the other links at the bottom of the site to learn more about the tricks used to undermine a Union drive. Week #1 This is a ground-breaking website in Union organizing. Like this site, authorization cards are distributed as discreetly as they can be: within your home and in total anonymity. We are following this model and are looking forward to petitioning for a vote. The dealers of Caesars Palace are currently petitioning for a NLRB vote with with Nevada's Dealers Union, TWU, the same AFL-CIO member at the center of our organization efforts. Examine their site carefully, and notice how feedback is handled. It is 100% confidential, as it should be. Your input on this site will be handed in the same way. It should be noted that the original website domain has been hijacked by Harrah's and its lawyers, and the site has a new location. |
